Welcome to Charleston, SC the hospitality capital of the world: home of George and Ira Gershwin where Porgy and Bess was written, home of the oldest theater in the country and home of the most church steeples per capita in the country. Also infamous for its Palmetto Trees, Pineapples, and of course pirates!
Stede Bonnet, commonly known as the "gentleman's pirate", was one of the more unique pirates. He was mostly known for his actions especially when he traveled with Blackbeard, the most famous pirate in Charleston. Blackbeard is known for blocking the harbor with his fleet and holding the entire town hostage for a ransom of, oddly enough, medicine. He sent some of his crew in search of medicine but when they hadn't returned he sailed his fleet into the harbor itself. When his crew finally returned with the medicine, they explained the delay was because the majority of the crew spent their time in Charleston, drunk. Ironically, they were getting drunk on bourbon.
Even the Prohibition couldn't stop our fair city from its love of cocktails. Prohibition? A nuisance, no question about it, but it didn't stop the cocktails from flowing in the Lowcountry! When they couldn't buy it, they made it. Hence where the term "moonshine" comes from.
Today, Charleston is home to over 10 local breweries, 4 distilleries and 1 winery. It's no wonder Charleston was awarded America's Favorite City by Travel + Leisure.
